Warning: Reviews of Silo season 1 will contain spoilers.

Juliette’s flashbacks in Hanna serve two major purposes: they fill in some crucial backstory on her mother – played here by Sienna Guillory – and they help to establish her rebellious nature. She’s had a rebellious streak throughout the entire series but it’s always been in more quiet, subtle ways. This week, she breaks the doors down and does things her way, even as the walls are closing in around her. I’m not sure if “the Silo always wins” has been a repeated refrain throughout the season, but it’s a fitting summation of the uphill battle our heroes face, and it gets more difficult after the events of this episode.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about Common’s presence on the show, but he’s fantastic within Hanna. He’s able to turn on the charm when trying to probe Ms. Hildebrand for information, openly admitting that he has a son because of her. But he knows how to be ruthless and cold when going against an opponent like Juliette or anyone in the Sheriff’s office.

It’s a bold move for Juliette to have Sims arrested, justified or not, but she seizes the opportunity to use his computer, hoping to get one step closer to getting the information on George’s hard drive. The Judicial raid on the Sheriff’s office brings memories of Juliette’s childhood back, and we see how her mother handled a similar raid in their own home.

Present-day Jules and her present-day father have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the season, and we see in Hanna how it may have started, when he sided with the authorities over her. Though it’s not entirely clear why Hanna would risk her and her family’s safety for a rabbit, perhaps it’s equally puzzling why a simple magnifier would be off limits in the first place. Nevertheless, the scene between Jules and Dr. Nichols is the best of the episode, as he learns that he’s not solely responsible for Hanna’s suicide.

The cat and mouse game between Sims and Jules has been an unexpected delight as the season has gone into its back half. Sims may spend the better part of Hanna behind bars, but that doesn’t stop him from pulling strings that keep the Silo under his thumb. The twist of the episode provides some thrilling moments, as Mayor Holland betrays Juliette and sends her on the run. With two episodes left, I have no idea what could happen or what could be revealed, but I remain as excited as ever to find out.
