Heartland Film Festival 2026: Tangles

Tangles

  • Director: Leah Nelson
  • Writer: Sarah Leavitt, Leah Nelson, Trev Renney
  • Starring: Bryan Cranston, Seth Rogen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson, Beanie Feldstein, Pamela Adlon, Samira Wiley, Bowen Yang

Grade: A

If I had a nickel for every 2026 movie with voiceover work from Bryan Cranston and Julia-Louis Dreyfuss that made me cry, I would have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. The first movie was The Sheep Detectives, the surprisingly successful talking animals detective comedy in the vein of Knives Out. The other, and arguably superior film, is Tangles, a breathtaking animated family drama that delves into a tragedy that very few films attempt to cover.

Heartland Film Festival 2026: I Play Rocky

I Play Rocky

  • Director: Peter Farrelly
  • Writer: Peter Gamble
  • Starring: Anthony Ippolito, AnnaSophia Robb, Stephan James, Matt Dillon, PJ Byrne, Jay Duplass, Tracy Letts, Robert Morgan

Grade: B

If there is any type of movie that is easy to greenlight in 2026, it’s those based on popular IP. From comic book movies to book adaptations, Hollywood has recently become a machine that pumps out projects based on material that people already like. Every once in a while, however, a movie like Obsession comes out and takes the world by storm and becomes a phenomenon. In 1976, that movie was Rocky: an inspiring, underdog sports drama that audiences fell in love with. 50 years later, I Play Rocky attempts to showcase what the Sylvester Stallone film did while still being the IP movie that Hollywood likes to release.

2026 Heartland Film Festival: TikTok Never Dies Review

TikTok Never Dies

  • Director: Hao Wu

Grade: B

Every once in a while, an app comes along and takes the world by storm. From entertainment apps like Vine to social-based ones like Snapchat, it seems every five or so years something comes along and changes how we view technology. This was the case with TikTok, an app that struck gold during COVID due to the way it blends entertainment and social functions.

Reminders of Him Review

Reminders of Him

  • Director: Vanessa Caswill
  • Writers: Colleen Hoover, Lauren Levine
  • Starring: Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow, Lauren Graham, Bradley Whitford

Grade: D

Colleen Hoover has been a staple in the fiction book community, but has since made her way into the film industry. With It Ends with Us and Regretting You being major box office successes, it looks like Hoover’s work will continue to be adapted to feature films, leading to the release of Reminders of Him. While the film maintains the rom-dram elements that makes Hoover such a popular author, it falls under the trapping of her previous film adaptations.

Project Hail Mary Review

Project Hail Mary

  • Director: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
  • Writer: Drew Goddard
  • Starring: Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub

Grade: A-

“Project Hail Mary” is a highly renowned book not only because of the vast popularity of Andy Weir, but because of how people connect with the story and its themes. Because of this, a film adaptation would have a lot to live up to. Even though films like The Martian proved that Weir’s stories adapt easily to the big screen, the ability to please fans of the original source material as well as bring in a new audience is a daunting task. Luckily, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and writer Drew Goddard proved to be the right ones to take on the project, with what will likely be one of the biggest movies of 2026.

Shelter Review

Shelter

  • Director: Ric Roman Waugh
  • Writer: Ward Parry
  • Starring: Jason Statham, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Bill Nighy, Harriet Walter, Naomi Ackie

Grade: C

For the past few years, the early months have graced audiences with the latest Jason Statham action vehicle. With films like The Beekeeper and A Working Man breaking the box office by grossing more than double their budgets worldwide, it shows that the world is not yet done with him. The latest film hoping to join Statham’s string of box office successes is Shelter, a redundant yet competently made action film.

Trevor Stucker’s Top 10 Movies of 2025

2025 has been an interesting year for the film industry. With every MCU film underperforming at the box office and Warner Bros. looking to sell to Netflix despite being the most successful film studio of the year, there aren’t many other years that turned out as unpredictable as 2025 was for films. Something that isn’t surprising is that there were a ton of excellent movies released in the calendar year. From blockbuster spectacle to indie dramas, so many films from this year are bound to make an impact on the future of filmmaking. There are some movies that could end up on this top ten list if I had seen them, including The Testament of Ann Lee, Resurrection, and The Voice of Hind Rajab. Out of the 200 movies I’ve seen in 2025, these ten made the biggest impact.

Avatar: Fire and Ash – Movie Review

Avatar: Fire and Ash

  • Director: James Cameron
  • Writers: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
  • Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Oona Chaplin, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Jack Champion, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss

Grade: C

It’s a worldwide event when James Cameron releases a new film. Not only does he push for original storytelling for the big screen, but he provides a spectacle that very few modern films offer. Whether it’s his Avatar films or Titanic, his movies bring people to the box office unlike any other filmmaker. Avatar: Fire and Ash is Cameron’s latest entry into the franchise, hoping to recapture the grand scale and universal storytelling of the previous two films.

Zootopia 2 Review

Zootopia 2

  • Director: Jared Bush, Byron Howard
  • Writer: Jared Bush
  • Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Idris Elba, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson

Grade: B+

Zootopia was easily one of Disney’s biggest hits of the 2010s. Grossing over a billion dollars at the box office and winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature over critically acclaimed films such as Moana and Kubo and the Two Strings (with both earning more Oscar nominations than Zootopia), it’s hard to find a bigger success than the 2016 Disney crime film. Because of that, Zootopia 2 had a lot of pressure on it to succeed, but somehow, the film manages to live up to expectations.

Eternity Review

Eternity

  • Director: David Freyne
  • Writer: David Freyne, Pat Cunnane
  • Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, John Early, Olga Merediz

Grade: B

In recent years, romance films have failed to receive theatrical releases. Unless it’s an adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel like Regretting You or It Ends with Us, the film will more than likely be released straight to a streaming service. A24 is looking to change that this year, with the recent release of Materialists as well as the upcoming film Eternity, a romance story following a heated love triangle between Miles Teller, Callum Turner and Elizabeth Olsen.
